Fluoxetine
Brand Name: Prozac

Overview
Prozac is the brand name for Fluoxetine hydrochloride. Prozac is an SSRI – a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor which increases and restores levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin to relieve depression.

Prozac usually starts relieving symptoms within one to four weeks.

Why is this drug prescribed?
Prozac is used most often to treat depression.

This medication is also used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) by relieving anxiety.

It has also been prescribed for patients with eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa, panic disorder or premenstrual syndrome

Warnings and Precautions
There have been limited studies concerning the use of Prozac on children 7 to 18 years of age. These studies indicate that Prozac may help to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder in children. Certain side effects such as unusual excitement, restlessness, irritability, and trouble in sleeping are especially frequent in children. In general, children are more sensitive than adults are to the effects of Prozac.

For Pregnant or Nursing Mothers: Prozac is passed into breast milk and is not recommended for nursing mothers. Some studies indicate that taking Prozac during pregnancy may cause problems in the baby, though other studies did not find any adverse effects due to Prozac.

Contraindications
Prozac should Not be used for people with the following medical conditions:

  1. liver or kidney disease
  2. a history of psychosis

Adverse Reactions
Prozac may cause the following reactions:

  1. dry mouth
  2. decreased appetite
  3. weight loss
  4. nausea
  5. altered taste
  6. insomnia
  7. headache
  8. blurred vision
  9. anxiety, nervousness
  10. drowsiness
  11. dizziness
  12. excessive sweating
  13. impaired erection
  14. hypomania
  15. seizures
  16. tremor

Interactions with Drugs and Other Substances
Drugs or substances that may interact with Prozac are:

  1. alcohol
  2. Buspirone (BuSpar), Bromocriptine (Parlodel), Dextromethorphan (cough medicine), Levodopa (Sinemet), Lithium (Eskalith), Meperidine (Demerol), Nefazodone (Serzone), Pentazocine (Talwin), Citalopram (Celexa), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), LSD, MDMA (ecstasy), marijuana, Sumatriptan (Imitrex), Tramadol (Ultram), Trazodone (Desyrel), Tryptophan, Venlafaxine (Effexor)—Using these medicines with Prozac or within 5 weeks of stopping Prozac may increase the chance of developing the rare, but very serious side effect of serotonin syndrome. with symptoms such as confusion, diarrhea, fever, poor coordination, restlessness, shivering, sweating, talking or acting with excitement you cannot control, trembling or shaking, or twitching.
  3. Tramadol combined with Prozac increases the chance of having convulsions (seizures)
  4. Also, taking tryptophan with fluoxetine may result in increased agitation or restlessness
  5. and intestinal or stomach problems
  6. carbamazepine
  7. cimetidine
  8. cyproheptadine
  9. Dextromethorphan
  10. furazolidone
  11. lithium
  12. metoprolol
  13. molindone
  14. medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as Alprazolam (Xanax)—Higher blood levels of alprazolam may occur and its effects may be increased
  15. medicines for mental depression
  16. medicines for mental problems or psychotic disturbances
  17. pimozide
  18. Valium(diazepam), Digitoxin/digoxin(digitalis preparations), Dilantin(phenytoin), and Coumadin(warfarin) – Prozac may increase their effects
  19. grapefruit juice can increase blood levels of Prozac
  20. anticoagulants (blood thinners) or Digitalis glycosides (heart medicine)—These may cause higher or lower blood levels of these medicines or Prozac, which also increases the chances of side effects
  21. Astemizole (e.g., Hismanal)—Higher blood levels of astemizole may occur, which increases the chance of having a very serious change in the rhythm of the heartbeat
