Brand Name: Cylert
Overview
Cylert is the brand name for Pemoline
a CNS (central nervous system) stimulant. This medication
is usually used in children, and it is rarely used after puberty.
Cylert is available in regular or chewable tablets.
Cylert
usually begins to work within a few days, though it's full
effects may not be felt for 3 to 4 weeks.
Why
is this drug prescribed?
Cylert is used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD).
Warnings
and Precautions
This
drug is not recommended for children under 6 years old.
Cylert
can be very habit-forming, and cause psychological and physical
dependence. However, this is rare in children, and more caution
is required for adult patients. Suddenly discontinuing this
medication may cause withdrawal symptoms.
For Pregnant
or Nursing Mothers: Cylert has caused problems in animal pregnancy.
It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk.
Cylert is not recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers.
Contraindications
Cylert
should Not be used for people with an allergy to this
medication.
Precautions
Cylert
may be used with caution in people with the following conditions:
- epilepsy
or a family history of seizures
- a history
of Tourette's syndrome
- liver,
kidney, or heart disease
- psychotic
behavior (especially in children)
- emotional
instability or a history or drug dependence increases
risk of addiction and misuse of this drug
- severe
mental illness Cylert may make the condition worse

may cause the following reactions:
- difficulty
sleeping (insomnia)
- loss
of appetite
- agitation
- irritability
- weight
loss
- abdominal
pain
- headache
- nausea
- drowsiness
- dizziness
- dry
mouth
- mood
changes / depression
- lack
of coordination
- tics/unusual
movements
- skin
rash
- liver
irritation/toxicity
- yellow
eyes / skin
- chest
pain
- hallucinations
- increased
heart rate
- tics
- Tourette's
syndrome
Interactions
with Drugs and Other Substances
Drugs
or substances that may interact with Cylert include:
- MAO
Inhibitors (within 14 days) combination with Cylert may
lead to sudden high blood pressure or fever, irregular heartbeat,
or seizures
- heterocyclic
antidepressants
- antiepileptic
drugs (such as Tegretol)
- other
CNS stimulants such as Ritalin, amantadine (Symmetrel),
amphetamines, appetite suppressants (diet pills), caffeine
(NoDoz), chlophedianol (Ulone), cocaine, asthma medication,
cold medicine, sinus medicine, antihistamines (including
nose drops or sprays), nabilone (Cesamet) these medications
increase the stimulant effect of Cylert, and may lead to
severe nervousness, irritability, trouble in sleeping, irregular
heartbeat, or seizures
- anticonvulsants
Cylert can reduce the effectiveness of these medications
