Dextroamphetamine Sulfate
Brand Names: Dexedrine, Dextrostat

Overview
Dexedrine is a stimulant and is a type of amphetamine. It is most commonly prescribed for ADHD in children and teenagers.

Why is this drug prescribed?
Dexedrine is used primarily to treat Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity. It is prescribed for the following symptoms:

  1. inability to pay attention (e.g. to class work)
  2. hyperactivity
  3. impulsiveness
  4. disruptive behavior
  5. peer relationship problems
  6. unstable mood / mood swings

Dexedrine is also occasionally used in adults to treat narcolepsy and, less frequently, as a short-term weight loss drug.

Warnings and Precautions
Dexedrine and other stimulants have the potential to be abused.

Long term Dexedrine treatment in children may cause unwanted effects on behavior and growth.

For Nursing Mothers: Animal studies have shown that amphetamines may increase the chance of birth defects if taken during the early months of pregnancy. Amphetamines pass into breast milk. Dexedrine has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies, but it is best not to breast-feed while taking an amphetamine

Contraindications
Medical problems which affect an individual’s ability to safely take Dexedrine are:

  1. an allergic reaction to amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, ephedrine, epinephrine, isoproterenol, metaproterenol, methamphetamine, norepinephrine, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine, or terbutaline.
  2. anxiety or severe tension
  3. a history of drug abuse
  4. glaucoma
  5. heart or blood vessel disease
  6. high blood pressure or
  7. severe mental illness, especially in children
  8. overactive thyroid
  9. tourette's syndrome or other tics–Dexedrine and other amphetamines may make the condition worse

Adverse Reactions

  1. agitation/irritability
  2. insomnia
  3. dry mouth
  4. headache
  5. nausea
  6. weight loss
  7. hallucinations
  8. liver irritation/toxicity
  9. increased heart rate
  10. tics
  11. Tourette's syndrome
  12. sexual difficulties (impotence, changes in libido)

Interactions with Drugs and Other Substances
Drugs or substances that may interact with Dexedrine are:

  1. MAO Inhibitors (within 14 days) - serious, even fatal, interactions can occur
  2. Acidifying agents like guanethidine, reserpine, and fruit juices can lower absorption of Dexedrine.
  3. Alkalinizing agents such as Diamox (acetazolamide) increase absorption of Dexedrine and other amphetamines.
  4. Tricyclic antidepressants may increase their levels when taken with Dexedrine. Although tricyclic antidepressants may be used with amphetamines to help make them work better, using the two medicines together may increase the chance of fast or irregular heartbeat, severe high blood pressure, or high fever.
  5. Thorazine (chlorpromazine), lithium, and Haldol (haloperidol) can lower the effectiveness of Dexedrine.
  6. Dexedrine increases the effects of norepinephrine.
  7. Amantadine (Symmetrel), Caffeine (NoDoz), Chlophedianol (Ulone), Methylphenidate (Ritalin), Nabilone (Cesamet), Pemoline (Cylert)– these medicines may increase the stimulant effects of Dexedrine and cause nervousness, irritability, trouble sleeping, and possibly convulsions (seizures).
  8. Appetite suppressants (diet pills), Medicine for asthma or other breathing problems, Medicine for colds, sinus problems, or hay fever or other allergies (including nose drops or sprays) - these medicines may increase the stimulant effects of amphetamines and cause nervousness, irritability, trouble sleeping, or convulsions (seizures), and affect the heart and blood vessels.
  9. Beta-adrenergic blocking agents (beta blockers) may increase the chance of high blood pressure and heart problems when taken with Dexedrine
  10. Digitalis glycosides (heart medicine). Amphetamines may cause additive effects, resulting in irregular heartbeat.
  11. Meperidine — when Dexedrine is taken at with meperidine, it increases the chances of certain side effects such as fever, convulsions, and even coma.
  12. Thyroid hormones–The effects either of these hormones or of Dexedrine may increase when both are being taken.
