Atomoxetine
Brand Name: Strattera
Overview
Strattera is the brand name for atomoxetine, a non-stimulant drug used to
treat ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). It is a selective
norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and works differently from stimulants,
such as Ritalin, which are used to treat ADHD. It is thought that Strattera
works by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine, which increases
norepinephrine levels. Norepinephrine may help regulate impulse control,
organization, and attention span. Strattera was FDA approved in November
2002 and is the only FDA approved ADHD medication for adults.
Why
is this drug prescribed?
Strattera is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or
ADD) in children, adolescents, and adults. It is sometimes chosen because the
stimulant properties of other ADHD medications tried have caused undesirable
side effects such as insomnia or tics, which Strattera is not supposed to do.
Warnings
and Precautions
Strattera has not been studied in children under 6 years old.
While Strattera, as a non-stimulant ADHD treatment, is expected to
cause fewer problems related to weight-loss or failure to gain sufficient
weight, weight loss is still a possible side effect and the weight of
children taking Strattera should be carefully monitored.
For Pregnant or Nursing Mothers: Strattera is not well studied in
pregnancy or lactation and is not recommended during pregnancy or for
mothers who are breast-feeding.
